New Pac-Man game in development for 30th Anniversary

Makato Iwai, COO of Namco Bandai Games America, has revealed during an interview with Gamasutra that a new Pac-Man game is in the works.

The reason for the new title is to celebrate the game’s 30th Anniversary next year. Leading the development will be Hirokazu Yasuhara, the co-creator and designer on the original Sonic the Hedgehog, meaning hopes are high for something special.
In the interview Iwai-san said:
We are in the midst of making Pac-Man come back because his 30th anniversary is in 2010 actually … As a group, we feel like we should do something to make him come back. So, there’s one project that we started working on, and [Yasuhara is] part of it.
If we see a remake true to the original, but incorporating new gameplay then this could be a game to have. That method has already worked well for the updated Space Invaders games on the DS.
This is certainly one to watch out for next year and hopefully a welcome change from the less than brilliant 3D Pac-Man games we have seen over the last few generations of consoles.
