Deck the halls with smarter shopping

To paraphrase an old adage, ‘tis the season to go shopping—and this year, ‘tis the season for shopping smart. Beginning en masse on Thanksgiving, when a significant number of major retailers opened their doors to allow bargain detectives to take advantage of early deals, people have been showing their shopping savvy, with no signs of stopping.

Using Insights for Search and research data from a Google/OTX study, we took a look at some trends we’re seeing from consumers in the U.S.—a new kind of shopper, the rise of mobile and a near-seamless online-to-store connection—and then satisfied our inner cool-seeker by taking a look at some of the most searched-for holiday gifts.

The new shopper
This year’s holiday shoppers are the smartest searchers in history. They’re searching for more specific terms and looking for more information than ever—from printable coupons to take into their local store, to the location of said stores; some people are even scanning barcodes to get more information about a product.

For example, searches for [black friday ads], [thanksgiving coupons], [black friday shipping code] and [buy one get one free] skyrocketed this year, as super-smart shoppers did their research before heading online or to the stores. They also made sure to get ahead of the Cyber Monday game: searches for things like [cyber monday deals] and [cyber monday sales] rose much quicker and earlier this year than last.

Shoppers didn’t stop looking for information once Cyber Monday arrived: [best cyber monday deals 2010] was the second-fastest rising search in the U.S. yesterday. Other top searches related to Cyber Monday included:

Mobile matters
For years, we’ve heard that it’s “the year of mobile.” This year it’s actually true, and people are embracing access to information on the go. Anyone who has a smartphone has a personal assistant now—and in their pocket, no less! People are using their mobile phones to compare prices, look for store locations and inventory in stock locally, and find deals.

According to research we conducted with OTX, 52% of U.S. smartphone users plan to use their phone to compare prices during the holiday shopping season and 40% plan to use their phones to read product reviews. We’ve seen evidence of this trend through the increased use of Google Shopper, a mobile shopping app that helps shoppers on the go research items and find the best place to buy them—whether online or in a nearby store.

Online meets offline
This year, both consumers and retailers are thinking about shopping differently. Gone is the wall between online and offline research and purchasing; consumers think about online and offline behavior relatively seamlessly these days—and retailers do too. Retailers are integrating things like inventory data across channels so that people can find what they’re looking for easily, online and off. Search queries show this crystal clear connection between information-hunting online and purchasing offline.

Searches for [black friday store hours], [printable coupons], and specific store names and hours have risen dramatically in the last year, as consumers do their homework prior to leaving home to shop.

Hot holiday gifts
Each holiday shopping season brings with it a number of buzzworthy toys. While we can’t be sure which toys will be on that list this year, searches for a number of items have risen significantly in recent weeks and months.

Those looking for toys for all ages have recently looked for information related to [squinkies], [lalaloopsy], [educational toys] and [ereaders]; searches for all of the above have risen dramatically in the past 30 days, as have searches for classic toys such as [legos] and [cabbage patch kids].

For lovers of a different kind of gift, a royal engagement may have prompted a rush on sapphire rings; searches for the same have risen dramatically in the past 30 days.

If you’d like to learn more about this year’s holiday shopping season, including some tidbits on what retailers are thinking, check out the Google Retail Blog for useful information.

In the meantime, happy (smart) shopping—and we hope you had a fruitful Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday!

Learn about the human side of climate change with Kofi Annan

(Cross-posted on the Google.org and LatLong Blogs)

Climate change is too often misunderstood to be simply an environmental issue, rather than a human issue. For our children and grandchildren, climate change is an issue of public health, economics, global security and social equity. This human side of climate change is explained in a new Google Earth tour narrated by former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan. Within these stories, you’ll find data and tools to explore this topic in more depth, and meet some of the people who are actively working on managing the risks of climate variability and change. We encourage you to take the tour to learn more about these human issues and the inspiring work of groups like the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) that are helping farmers cope with climate change. We hope this video will serve as a useful tool as educators help students around the world understand the complexity of this issue.

This is the latest in our series of climate change tours that we’re releasing leading up to the global U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP16) talks in Cancun, Mexico this week.

As part of the Google Earth for Educators Community, we’ve also created a special Climate Change Educators Resources page that teachers can use in their classrooms. Here, teachers can find the tools they need to create lesson plans about climate change, including all the individual Google Earth KML layers available for download. Teachers and students can overlay multiple data layers that help illustrate climate change, and discuss and analyze them as part of K-12 and higher education curriculum. We’re also looking for lessons plans for any school grade that use this narrated tour or these Google Earth KML layers, so if you’re a teacher or instructor, please submit your lesson plan for review now.

Visit google.com/landing/cop16/climatetours.html or the Climate Change Educators Resources page to learn more about climate change today.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood(Review)

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood(Review)

Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Genre: Action, Platformer
Release Date: N Amer - 11/10/16
Platforms: PlayStation 3 Xbox 360

Brotherhood begins precisely where the last game ended, with Ezio defeating the pope and hearing Minerva’s message to Desmond. After a brief transition, Ezio’s home in Monterigonni comes under attack and he is forced to relocate to Rome, where he plans to take on the Borgia and put an end to the evil family once and for all.

To do this he will need the help of several guilds, and building this network is what drives forward the progression of the plot. The courtesans, thieves, and fighters all have a dozen or so missions associated with them that unlock over the course of the nine memories Desmond must complete. These missions range from assassinations to escort missions, but I was a little disappointed that there’s no reward for completing all of them. Even the guild challenges—a list of tasks that “rank up” each guild upon completion—have very little worthwhile reward, usually unlocking a weapon that was inferior to the one already equipped.

The titular Brotherhood itself comes into play nearly halfway through the game, where Ezio just ups and decides to start recruiting people to become assassins. I was a little disappointed at the execution of this feature, as it feels totally half-baked despite being the namesake of the entire game. Ezio literally just walks out on to the street, finds a random peasant getting their ass beat by soldiers, saves them, then they join the assassins guild. Just like that.
Once recruited, there is a system of missions you can send your assassins on to level up and gain new equipment, but the customization possibilities are very limited. Eventually they all end up looking exactly the same, and having the same abilities. Even the assassin ceremony seems rushed, like the game wants to show you everything else that is going on. But the actual utility of the assassins knows no ends, as you’ll be able to call them in to take out targets or even help you in a fight. By the time you have a pack of fighters and six master assassins by your side, there really is no obstacle that can stand in your way.

And there is a lot going on; Brotherhood is one of the most robust open-world games ever created. My biggest complaint about the second AC was that you eventually get all of these cool abilities and toys and then the game ends. I only fired my gun once in ACII, and that was mandatory for a mission. In Brotherhood, the gun and the throwing knives and the poison all play a much larger role, if you want.
Aside from a few snags, Brotherhood has some of the most refined and fluid combat and free-running ever seen in a game. Rome is three times larger than the setting of the previous game, and yet I didn’t mind running and climbing my way across all the beautiful architecture because Ezio controls so damn well. Truly, Ubisoft Montreal deserves to be commended on how superb Brotherhood feels.

Brotherhood’s biggest addition is, of course, the multiplayer. It was a letdown that no combat modes were included, but what is here is one of the most unique and compelling multiplayer offerings available. The basic idea is that players assume the roles of Abstergo assassins-in-training, and use the Animus to practice their skills by hunting each other down.
Each match starts with players being given an assignment (ie. another player to find and kill), but the catch is that someone else is also looking for you. So you’re both hunter and prey simultaneously, and that’s as never-racking and exciting as a multiplayer game can get. Sure, you know you’re going to encounter enemies in first-person shooters, but none of them have a picture of your face with a bullseye on it.
The virtual world you’ll be playing in is made up of a bunch of clones, so it’s easy to blend in with the crowd. If someone starts running or climbing up a wall, you know that’s a player. Many times your prey will simply come to you though, as heading in their general direction while maintaining your own cover will allow you to sneak up on them and perform a stealth kill. Hopefully your own hunter won’t see this though, otherwise yours will be the next throat to be slit.

There is a Modern Warfare-esque leveling system which grants the use and customization of abilities, perks, and even killstreaks. These really do change the game up a great deal, as once pistols and smoke bombs get involved, it’s basically a bunch of Ezios all out to kill each other. You might not expect this all to work well, and yes there are a few kinks, but I’d rather play this than Black Ops any day of the week. It’s nice to have an experience that isn’t a carbon copy of what’s currently being offered for multiplayer.
It becomes immediately obvious that Brotherhood is the missing piece of Assassin’s Creed II. Not that ACII was lacking on content, or that Brotherhood does not stand well on its own two feet, but there are a lot of ideas carried over from last year’s title that have evolved or been fleshed out far better. I find myself comparing Brotherhood to Fable II; both are incremental releases to a pre-established formula, and both have a ton of ideas that are not implemented to the fullest of their potential. The difference is that what Brotherhood does, more often than not, falls just short of brilliance, yet even when operating at 80 percent Ubisoft has crafted a game far better than most others on the market, and the superb multiplayer puts it over the top.

Splatterhouse(Review)

Publisher: NAMCO BANDAI Games America
Developer: Namco Bandai Games America Inc.
Genre: Action, Horror, Platformer
Release Date: N Amer - 11/10/23
Platforms: PlayStation 3 Xbox 360

Have you ever wondered what a video game would be like if the developer never held back on the gore or violence? Perhaps it could be littered with decapitations, excessive blood spilt all over the environment and countless limbs tore off of unlucky enemies. If that sounds enticing then Splatterhouse should be right up your alley as it doesn’t hold back any punches and goes beyond the normal conventions of being a mature-rated title.
Splatterhouse does itself a favor with the over-the-top violence as the blood being thrown at the screen and numerous bones being broken help hide how shallow the title truly is. As an action game, Splatterhouse does very little to push the genre forward and relies on enclosing the players in a room until they eliminate all the enemies within it to move on. Room after room players will wade through demons and are able to dismember many of them from their torsos, necks, shoulders and many others via Splatter Kills.

Splatter Kills allow the player to take a weakened enemy, enter a darkened cutscene where Rick Taylor, the hero of the story, viciously attacks them to showcase a glorious death. Whether it is yanking their head off or ripping their arms off, the Splatter Kills take anywhere from 3-7 seconds and allows the player to bask in the brutality of Splatterhouse. After the first few hours, I tended to avoid the Splatter Kills to push forward and complete the title as they tended to slow down the action more so than I enjoyed.
Without the blood, Splatterhouse is much less of a game than it is a B movie in the video game form. While Splatterhouse does permit players to perform combinations, there’s very little technical requirement to the combat. Continue to press the face buttons in succession and you’ll be able to tear through waves of enemies in no time. Players are eligible to use Necro Moves that demonstrate even more wicked maneuvers, but players have to build up their Necro Meter by slaughtering the enemies set before them. There’s also Berserker Mode, a mode where the Terror Mask takes over and unleashes carnage that Taylor never could have done without the influence of the diabolical mask.
Another area that Splatterhouse trudges forward and doesn’t relent on is the dialogue and voice acting. Yes, it’s terribly cheesy, but that’s excusable as it never attempts to deliver Shakespearian dialogue. It’s a good ole’ survival-horror action title that wants to bask in the glory of violence, so the writing fits exceptionally well. It also helps that Jim Cummings, a popular voice actor who is known for his works as Tigger and Winnie-the-Pooh, provides hilarious one-liners one after another as the Terror Mask that takes Taylor on a journey he’ll never forget to win back his girlfriend Jennifer Willis from the clutches of the evil Dr. Henry West. The only downside of the voice acting is that the one-liners do tend to become repetitive, but it was easy to overlook them due to the sheer amount of grotesque violence taking place.

Aside from the bloodshed that takes place in hundreds of enclosed rooms, there are boss battles to encounter but they never bordered the limitless potential that a game like Splatterhouse – a title that takes mature themes to the max – has. At least Namco Bandai had the courtesy of including a survival mode, and the three original games – Splatterhouse 1, 2, 3 – as unlockables to raise the longevity. As an eight hour game on the easiest difficulty, the repetition did set in halfway through and hampered the overall effectiveness of the brutality that took place.
As blood splashes on the ground, walls, on Taylor’s body and even on the screen, Splatterhouse shows that not all video games have to take the route of melodramas. It’s simple. It’s fun. Most importantly, it does its job at giving action fans a fantastic romp through a violent backdrop. It also helps that the soundtrack chosen is right out of a metalhead’s dreams.

Flight Control HD(PC)(Review)

Flight Control HD(PC)
Publisher: Firemint
Developer: Firemint
Genre: Other / Miscellaneous, Puzzle, Strategy
Release Date: N Amer - 11/10/23
Platforms: PC
The premise of Flight Control is as simple as can be: draw flight paths for never-ending waves of airplanes, directing them to the correct airfield and avoiding mid-air collisions. It really is a perfect fit for the iPhone and its kin, given the short and simple gameplay, plus the visceral feel of directing aircraft with your fingertips. However, a high-definition port was released on Steam, so how does it stack up on PCs and Macs?
Visually, Flight Control HD is a rather pretty game. The various aircraft and levels are simplistic in a good way, and are overall charming; for a game as casual as this, they are a perfect fit. As you would expect from a game with HD in the name, it continues to look good no matter what the resolution. The game also adds a few little visual touches that weren’t present in its iOS predecessor, such as landing lights on the airfields.

The control scheme is what makes or breaks the game, however. Directing the planes with the mouse is easy enough, but it simply isn’t as fun compared to the touchscreen controls, especially when the screen becomes crowded with planes. The game makes a few conceits for PC users, such as a reticule highlighting collisions and a few moments of slowdown, but these training wheels don’t entirely make up for the mouse controls.

The gameplay has an unfortunate lack of variety, too. While there are nine maps, the only things that change between them are the positioning of the airfields and the visual appearance of aircraft. The exception to this is the Steam-exclusive “stunts” map, which introduces an admittedly rather fun gameplay mechanic. However, it is just one level, and it feels like Firemint could have done a lot more to make it unique to the PC platform.
So is Flight Control HD a bad game? No, not really. Like I said before, it is absolutely perfect for the iPhone and other touchscreen devices, but loses a little something when played with a mouse, and for more than a few minutes at a time. After having been spoiled by the abundance of Flash games available online, I’m not convinced that Flight Control HD will have anywhere near the staying power of its mobile counterpart on the PC. Casual gamers will find something to love, but don’t feel bad about giving it a miss.

News Avalanche!

Zero-K:

Zero-K is the reboot of Spring RTS game Complete Annihilation, with aims to distance itself from the TA IP that has plagued Spring games, and just generally be better in every way :)

It comes with a revamped UI, multiple specialist commander units to play as, and a single faction instead of the traditional 2. The team is also providing a set of web services such as map and mission lists to enhance the experience, and maybe we'll even see the resurgence of Planet Wars, the awesome persistent galactic RTS that was running a while back

IrrRPG Builder

IrrRPG Builder looks like a promising 3D RPG IDE. So far, it features a terrain editor, drag and drop object placement, and scriptable using Lua.

There's a set of tutorials to get you started, and comes with enough content to play around with; the scriptable object system along with template scripts make it really beginner friendly. The built-in script validator could use a bit of work (doesn't detect undefined functions yet, which crashes the game) and adding some sort of api refference along with autocompletion would really make it a fully fledged IDE :)

Ryzom:

We've been giving Ryzom quite a bit of love recently, with their Linux native client and all, but they just announced an In-game competition for a Linux netbook and got accepted for the Google Code-In initiative. Here's hoping they have lots of success!

Warlock's Gauntlet:

Warlock's Gauntlet is a highly polished Gauntlet/Diablo/Hack'nSlash mashup. A nice interface, smooth gameplay and lots of spells make this a very nice find.(Thanks archl from the comments :) It even has co-op!

Egoboo

The Egoboo team just released their version 2.8.1 beta, it adds randomized loot, special effects and lots of bugfixes. Check it out!

FreedroidRPG

Freedroid recently had their website redesigned(aww I liked the old one :(), and also released version 0.14 which included the Summer of Code work. This added better randomized dungeons, a better interface for the level editor and replaced magical weapons with a more sci-fi addon system (the last addition was done by Nekotaku from Lips of Suna, which also had a release recently :)

Rad Racer - Review

High Speed Fun
Rad Racer on the NES

Square-Enix is primarily known for their role-playing games, and rightfully so. After more than two decades of Final Fantasy games, it's difficult to dispute their impressive track record for fantasy RPGs. However, mastery in one genre doesn't mean that a developer has to make only games of that description, but all of that was yet to come. In the summer of 1987, Final Fantasy was still months away, and even though the young company was flailing financially, it managed to release Rad Racer on August 7th in Japan and October 1st in North America.

History is all well and good, but video games are all about the gameplay: if the game isn't fun, it's not fun. Thankfully, however, Rad Racer remains an amazing game and one of the finest driving games on the NES. Given the hardware, developers had to keep things simple in those days, but Rad Racer's arcade style and exhilarating sense of speed keep Rad Racer remains enjoyable and excellent. Lest I lavish on the praise too thickly, let's talk about the game in a little more detail.

The first thing you're likely to notice when looking at Rad Racer is the graphics. The Super Nintendo with its “Mode-7” capabilities was still years away, but this game presents a very competent 3D illusion within the narrow bounds of the NES processing power. Compared to the sometimes tacky use of Mode-7 in SNES games, Rad Racer has a beautifully old school look because, of course, this game is old school, and with that title comes a certain level of difficulty. This is not an easy game, and you'll have to master the gas, brake, and boost mechanics before you can advance to the later levels. Aiding you in this effort are the wonderfully tight controls. In stark contrast to the too-much or too-little brakes of so many racing games, Rad Racer feels just right in the controls.

Uh-Oh...

My one complaint with Rad Racer would have to be the way your car interacts with the other cars on the road. You're not really racing with anyone in the sense that there are no positions and you don't have to pass any cars to win, per se, but if you don't pass cars, you'll run out of time and face a game over. The other cars move much more slowly than you do, so you'll come up to cars fairly often, but when you do come upon cars, you'll know it. Hitting another car squarely from the rear will slow you down, but if you touch another car from the side, you'll go flying off to the side of the screen where you'll likely crash and burn. Needless to say, it can be frustrating to be tossed off the screen by a car that continues on unfazed, and at times the game can seem more like bumper cars than anything close to driving a real car.

However, any shortcomings are more than made up for by the sheer joy of playing the game. There isn't really a better way to say it: this game simply appeals to me, as I'm sure you've gathered. You've probably heard good things about the game, and, while I hesitate to gush too much, I highly recommend that you pick this game up. There's really no reason not to have this game in your collection, especially given the fact that it can be purchased for just a dollar or two.

Review - Fable III

The Game in question? Fable 3
What console did we review it on? Xbox 360
Is it available on any other formats, and if so, which? No other formats as of yet.
Who reviewed this game? Serde

So, without wishing to dilly dally... Any more, it being a month since this game hit store shelves and made me scream in pleasure as a leather bound book fell into my hands containing Fable III. I just want to briefly sum up my thoughts during my first play-through: It's good, but not as good as the second one. Take from that what you will, as Fable III is a mixed bag, there wasn't many sweets I enjoyed, but perhaps you are a fan of Bertie Basset whilst I stick to chewing on jelly tots.

The games narrative opens up on a solemn note, your brother (Who it has to be said, is a bit of a dick) Is the ruler of Albion, Fables fantasy land that is so close to England in the 19th century you could taste it, bar the magic and exceptionally cool people within the royal family (ooh, burned). But I digress, within the first half an hour of wondering around the palace you are thrust into a decision so suddenly, and so perfectly that I found myself messaging people over the globe asking advice on what to choose. This moment gave me hope for this game, however it is unfortunately the hardest choice you'll be making in III, as with all games with "choice" nowadays, the mechanics the choices work on are plain as day, and it's easy to exploit any further decision moments. Either way, this choice pisses your prince (or princess, ladies) right off. So he huffs and he puffs and his mate Walter and his Butler take him away! It's at this point you discover you are a hero, and (surprise, surprise) are destined for the throne as Peter Molyneux has been telling us from the go like a dog on speed alerting us to some bloke walking past the house.

It has to be said that the "King", or should I say "Monarch" section of the game is one of the most unique sections to be in a game within recent memory. Which is why it's so unfortunate that it doesn't last long at all. The build up over the game falls flat, as it comes down to you ruling for about 5 to 6 days before the game calls it quits and lets you roam free, which is not a good thing. However, this is a section that should be experienced by everyone, so at least watch someone going through this portion of the game.

So the game-play eh? If you've played Fable II, you know the score. There’s a melee button, a magic button and a ranged button for combat, hold the button for more powerful attacks or repeat for a combo, simple hack and slash fun. Whilst mixing the different weapons and spells together in fights can be cool, you won't be coming back for the thrill of the fight. Ever. The conversation system has taken a turn for the worse as you have to talk to each villager individually rather than gathering a crowd. This makes things slow and clunky when getting a village to like you, and whilst the meetings feel more intimate, because the mechanics are so obvious and you're limited to two to three expressions at a time, there's no fun to be had here. The likes and dislikes for each villager have also done a runner, so each villager is pretty much the same person.

The much touted Pause menu? It's even slower than Fable 2's menu's! Sure, it looks cool and it's nice to walk round, but i can't find anything! For those not in the know, Fable III's pause menu is another 3d physical environment for you to explore, if you have a weapon, it's on the sword rack in the armoury. If you have a new jacket, you'll find it in the walk in wardrobe! Literally everything you collect, money, achievements, everything will be on display in some way shape or form within the pause menu, known in game as "the sanctuary". But as i say, whilst cool, it's too much hassle.

By far the best part of this game was the voice cast. You've got John Cleese, Simon Pegg, Sir Ben Kingsley, Stephen Fry and various other British actors taking up roles. It's masterful, and the British humour, as ever in the Fable games, is funny. If there’s anything that'll keep you coming back, it's the characters these guys pour their heart and soul into.

To round-up some other points. The game will set you back 10 hours at the least and around 30 at the most in one play-through. Definitely worth the £40 but i wouldn't spring for the collectors edition especially as the dlc included is almost entirely available on xbox live now. The property market in this game is too much hassle compared to II also, as houses need repairing every 20 or so minutes otherwise people won't pay rent. So you'll have to go to the Sanctuary, find the town that person is in, the house and then repair it within the map, it's too much hassle if you own most of Albion! Thankfully though it doesn't occur with shops!

"Fable III is a game everyone should have a go at. The first half an hour is an experience in itself, and the Monarch portion is something to behold however short it may be. On the other hand, the game is very shallow and basic in game-play, and the pause menu gimmick can become tedious."

- For anyone who purchases this game -
A WARNING: DAY 120, IS THE LAST DAY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Introducing Google Earth 6—the next generation of realism

(Cross-posted on the Google LatLong Blog)

Today we’re introducing the latest version of Google Earth, our interactive digital atlas. Now you can explore your childhood home, visit distant lands or scope out your next vacation spot with even more realistic tools.

In Google Earth 6, we’re taking realism in the virtual globe to the next level with two new features: a truly integrated Street View experience and 3D trees. We’ve also made it even easier to browse historical imagery. Over the next several days on our LatLong blog, we’ll be digging deeper into these great new features, but here’s an overview to whet your appetite.

Integrated Street View
When Google Earth was first introduced, people were wowed by the ability to virtually fly from outer space right down to the roof of their house. While flying over rooftops gives you a super-human view of our world, the ground level is where we experience our daily lives. We took our first baby steps toward bringing the Google Earth experience to street level with our implementation of Street View in Google Earth in 2008, which enabled flying into Street View panoramas. In Google Earth 6, the Street View experience is now fully integrated, so you can journey from outer space right to your doorstep in one seamless flight.

Now, you’ll notice that Pegman is docked right alongside the navigation controls—an ever-present travel companion ready whenever you want to get your feet on the street and take a virtual walk around. Just pick up Pegman and drop him wherever you see a highlighted blue road to fly right down to the ground. Once there, you can use the navigation controls or your mouse to look around. And unlike our earlier Street View layer, you can now move seamlessly from one location to another as if you’re walking down the street by using the scroll-wheel on your mouse or the arrow keys on your keyboard. If you want to visit somewhere farther away, simply click the “exit” button and you’ll immediately return to an aerial view where you can easily fly to your next destination.

Drag and drop Pegman to enter Street View. The blue lines indicate where Street View imagery is available.

3D trees
I think we can all agree that our planet without trees would be a pretty desolate place. Besides the ever-important task of providing us with the oxygen we breathe, trees are an integral part of the landscape around us. In Google Earth, while we and our users have been busy populating the globe with many thousands of 3D building models, trees have been rather hard to come by. All that is changing with Google Earth 6, which includes beautifully detailed, 3D models for dozens of species of trees, from the Japanese Maple to the East African Cordia to my personal favorite, the cacao tree. While we’ve just gotten started planting trees in Google Earth, we already have more than 80 million trees in places such as Athens, Berlin, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco and Tokyo. Through our Google Earth Outreach program, we’ve also been working with organizations including the Green Belt Movement in Africa, the Amazon Conservation Team in Brazil and CONABIO in Mexico to model our planet’s threatened forests.

To enjoy these leafy additions to Google Earth, make sure you turn on the 3D buildings layer on the left side panel. As a starting point, try a search for “Palace of Fine Arts San Francisco.” Once you arrive at your destination, click the zoom slider. You’ll then be taken down to the ground where you can use our new ground-level navigation to walk among the trees.

Easy-to-use historical imagery
One of the features people told us they liked best in Google Earth 5 was the availability of historical imagery, which enables you to visually go back in time to see such things as Warsaw in 1935, London in 1945, and Port-au-Prince Haiti before and after the devastating earthquake of January 2010. But it wasn’t always obvious when historical imagery was available for a particular place, making this feature one of Google Earth’s lesser-known gems.

So with this new version, we’ve made it very easy to discover historical imagery. When you fly to an area where historical imagery is available, the date of the oldest imagery will appear in the status bar at the bottom of the screen. If you click on this date, you’ll instantly be taken back in time to view imagery from that time period. You can then browse through all the historical imagery available for that location, or simply close the time control and return to the default view.

Need for Speed: Undercover

EA’s dominating racing series takes a left turn with this uniquely action-oriented entry in the franchise, where players use their driving skills honed in previous NFS games to control their vehicle in dangerous, high speeds encounters.
The game features international movie star, Maggie Q, as the lead character in the big-budget live-action sequences that propel the story forward as players get behind the wheel.
Undercover takes the franchise back to its roots and re-introduces break-neck cop chases, the world’s hottest cars and spectacular highway battles.
