As a gamer currently residing in Australia, the whole shenanigans with Australia refusing R classifications to certain games like Left 4 Dead 2 and Fallout 3 is pissing me off, and no one wants to talk about why.
Until now, that is.
As PC Zone's article explains "introducing an R18+ rating for games in Australia would require all of the country's attorney-generals to consent, but South Australian attorney-general Michael Atkinson continues to oppose such a move."
This Atkinson guy has this to say about his opposition, "It certainly does restrict choice to a small degree, but that is the price of keeping this material from children and vulnerable adults. In my view, the small sacrifice is worth it," he told news.com.au. "People are participating and 'acting-out' violence and criminal behaviour when they are playing a videogame."
As a result, Australia will remain backwards as far as advancing video games as a mature medium of entertainment is concerned. And seriously, if Atkinson is so concerned about people acting out violence as a result of videogames, why is he not putting blame too on television and film? There are such backward-thinking individuals in the States too that are bitching on the problems with video games in inducing madness and delusion in people.
We're really getting into philosophical territory here, who do we blame? The gun or the shooter?
Personally for me, games don't do anything other than affect and inform, just as any other medium does. It's the retards who go out and shoot all their high school classmates that is at fault. They need to be picked up and cared for long before they can formulate such crazed and wrongful thoughts.
